Microhydropower Calculator
Formulas
The Microhydropower Calculator uses the following formula:
- Power (\( P \)) = \( \eta \times \rho \times g \times h \times Q \)
- Where:
- \( \eta = \text{Efficiency (as a decimal, e.g., 70% = 0.70)} \)
- \( \rho = \text{Water density (1000 kg/m³)} \)
- \( g = \text{Acceleration due to gravity (9.81 m/s²)} \)
- \( h = \text{Head (height of water drop in meters)} \)
- \( Q = \text{Flow rate (volume of water in m³/s)} \)
How to Use
- Enter the head (in meters) in the “Head” field.
- Enter the flow rate (in m³/s) in the “Flow Rate” field.
- Enter the efficiency (in percent) in the “Efficiency” field.
- Optionally, click an adjust button to set typical values (e.g., Low Head).
- Click “Calculate Power” to see your results.
- Scroll to the “Results” section for detailed calculations.
- Use the share buttons to share your power output or embed the calculator.
Examples
- Example 1: Head = 5m, Flow Rate = 0.1 m³/s, Efficiency = 70%
Power = 0.70 × 1000 × 9.81 × 5 × 0.1 = 3,433.5 W (3.43 kW) - Example 2: Head = 10m, Flow Rate = 0.05 m³/s, Efficiency = 75%
Power = 0.75 × 1000 × 9.81 × 10 × 0.05 = 3,680.63 W (3.68 kW) - Example 3: Head = 2m, Flow Rate = 0.2 m³/s, Efficiency = 65%
Power = 0.65 × 1000 × 9.81 × 2 × 0.2 = 2,551.54 W (2.55 kW)
