Ergonomic Desk Setup Score Calculator

Evaluate the ergonomic quality of your desk setup based on chair, monitor, keyboard/mouse, and desk height.

1 = non-adjustable, 5 = fully adjustable (height, backrest, armrests)
0 = top of screen at eye level, positive = above, negative = below
1 = poor (e.g., reaching), 5 = ideal (wrists neutral, close to body)
Ideal: elbows at 90° when typing, typically 65–75 cm

Formulas Used

The Ergonomic Desk Setup Score is calculated using a weighted formula assessing chair adjustability, monitor height, keyboard/mouse positioning, and desk height.

  1. Monitor Height Score:

    \[ M_{\text{score}} = \max\left(0, 5 – \frac{|M|}{5}\right) \]

Where \( M \) is monitor height in cm relative to eye level. Score decreases as deviation from 0 cm increases.

  2. Desk Height Score:

    \[ D_{\text{score}} = \max\left(0, 5 – \frac{|D – 70|}{5}\right) \]

Where \( D \) is desk height in cm, with 70 cm as the ideal average. Score decreases as deviation increases.

  3. Raw Ergonomic Score:

    \[ R_{\text{raw}} = w_1 C + w_2 M_{\text{score}} + w_3 K + w_4 D_{\text{score}} \]

    Where:

    • \( C \): Chair adjustability rating (1–5)
    • \( K \): Keyboard/mouse positioning rating (1–5)
    • \( w_1 = 5 \): Weight for chair adjustability
    • \( w_2 = 5 \): Weight for monitor height
    • \( w_3 = 5 \): Weight for keyboard/mouse
    • \( w_4 = 5 \): Weight for desk height

  4. Ergonomic Desk Setup Score:

    \[ \text{EDSS} = \max\left(0, \min\left(100, \frac{R_{\text{raw}}}{100} \cdot 100\right)\right) \]

Normalizes the raw score (0–100) to 0–100. Ratings: Poor (0–25), Fair (25–50), Good (50–75), Excellent (75–100).

Example Calculations

Example 1: Average Home Office Setup

Inputs: Chair Adjustability = 3, Monitor Height = -10 cm, Keyboard/Mouse = 4, Desk Height = 72 cm

Calculations:

  • Monitor Height Score: \[ \max\left(0, 5 – \frac{|-10|}{5}\right) = \max(0, 5 – 2) = 3 \]
  • Desk Height Score: \[ \max\left(0, 5 – \frac{|72 – 70|}{5}\right) = \max(0, 5 – 0.4) = 4.6 \]
  • Raw Ergonomic Score: \[ 5 \cdot 3 + 5 \cdot 3 + 5 \cdot 4 + 5 \cdot 4.6 = 15 + 15 + 20 + 23 = 73 \]
  • Ergonomic Desk Setup Score: \[ \frac{73}{100} \cdot 100 = 73 \]
  • Rating: Good (50–75)

Result: Ergonomic Desk Setup Score: 73 (Good)

Example 2: Poor Setup with Non-Adjustable Chair

Inputs: Chair Adjustability = 1, Monitor Height = -20 cm, Keyboard/Mouse = 2, Desk Height = 60 cm

Calculations:

  • Monitor Height Score: \[ \max\left(0, 5 – \frac{|-20|}{5}\right) = \max(0, 5 – 4) = 1 \]
  • Desk Height Score: \[ \max\left(0, 5 – \frac{|60 – 70|}{5}\right) = \max(0, 5 – 2) = 3 \]
  • Raw Ergonomic Score: \[ 5 \cdot 1 + 5 \cdot 1 + 5 \cdot 2 + 5 \cdot 3 = 5 + 5 + 10 + 15 = 35 \]
  • Ergonomic Desk Setup Score: \[ \frac{35}{100} \cdot 100 = 35 \]
  • Rating: Fair (25–50)

Result: Ergonomic Desk Setup Score: 35 (Fair)

Example 3: Near-Perfect Ergonomic Setup

Inputs: Chair Adjustability = 5, Monitor Height = 0 cm, Keyboard/Mouse = 5, Desk Height = 70 cm

Calculations:

  • Monitor Height Score: \[ \max\left(0, 5 – \frac{|0|}{5}\right) = 5 \]
  • Desk Height Score: \[ \max\left(0, 5 – \frac{|70 – 70|}{5}\right) = 5 \]
  • Raw Ergonomic Score: \[ 5 \cdot 5 + 5 \cdot 5 + 5 \cdot 5 + 5 \cdot 5 = 25 + 25 + 25 + 25 = 100 \]
  • Ergonomic Desk Setup Score: \[ \frac{100}{100} \cdot 100 = 100 \]
  • Rating: Excellent (75–100)

Result: Ergonomic Desk Setup Score: 100 (Excellent)

How to Use the Calculator

Follow these steps to evaluate your desk setup’s ergonomic quality:

  1. Enter Chair Adjustability: Rate chair adjustability (1–5, 1 = non-adjustable, 5 = fully adjustable).
  2. Enter Monitor Height: Input monitor height relative to eye level in cm (-50 to 50, 0 = ideal).
  3. Enter Keyboard/Mouse Positioning: Rate positioning (1–5, 1 = poor, 5 = ideal).
  4. Enter Desk Height: Input desk height in cm (50–100, ideal ~65–75 cm).
  5. Calculate: Click “Calculate Ergonomic Score” to see the result.
  6. Interpret Result: The result shows a 0–100 score with a rating (Poor: 0–25, Fair: 25–50, Good: 50–75, Excellent: 75–100). If you see “Please fill in all fields,” ensure all inputs are valid.
  7. Share or Embed: Use the share buttons to post results on social media, copy the result, or get an embed code.

Note: This is a simplified model. Actual ergonomic quality depends on additional factors like posture, lighting, and break frequency.
