Hydropower Flow Duration Curve Calculator

Hydropower Flow Duration Curve Calculator

Formulas

The Flow Duration Curve (FDC) represents the percentage of time a given flow is exceeded:

  • FDC(\%) = \( \frac{\text{Rank}}{\text{Total Months} + 1} \times 100 \)
  • Where:
    • Rank = Position of flow when sorted in descending order
    • Total Months = 12 (for monthly data)

How to Use

  1. Enter the average monthly flow rates (in m³/s) for each month.
  2. Optionally, click an adjust button to set typical values (e.g., Low for January).
  3. Click “Calculate FDC” to generate the flow duration curve data and chart.
  4. Scroll to the “Results” section for the table and visual representation.

Examples

  1. Example 1: Jan=1.5, Feb=1.4, …, Jul=3.5 (as default)
FDC shows 3.5 m³/s exceeded ~8% of the time, 1.4 m³/s exceeded ~92% of the time.
