The Knitting Yarn Estimator calculates the amount of yarn needed for a knitting project based on the project type, size, and yarn weight. It’s a valuable tool for knitters planning their projects.

How to Use

Select a project type (scarf, sweater, blanket) from the dropdown.
Specify the size:
- For Scarf/Blanket: Enter length and width in centimeters.
- For Sweater: Select a size (Small, Medium, Large, X-Large).
Select a yarn weight (fingering, sport, worsted, bulky).
Click the “Estimate” button to calculate the yarn needed. The page will scroll to the result.
The area/size and yarn needed (grams, yards, meters) will be displayed in a table, with detailed steps below.
Use the “Copy Result” button to copy the results and steps.

Formulas

For Scarf/Blanket:

Area (m²) = (Length × Width) / 10000

Yards = Area × Base Yardage per m²

For Sweater:

Yards = Base Yardage × Adjustment Factor

Grams and Meters:

Grams = Yards / Yards per Gram

Meters = Yards × 0.9144

Important Notes

Dimensions must be positive numbers. Invalid inputs (e.g., non-numeric, zero, or negative) will trigger an error.
Project type, size, and yarn weight must be selected; leaving them blank will trigger an error.
Base Yardage per m²: Fingering (400), Sport (350), Worsted (300), Bulky (250).
Yards per Gram: Fingering (8), Sport (6), Worsted (4), Bulky (2).
