Pumped Storage Hydropower Calculator
Formulas
The Pumped Storage Hydropower Calculator uses the following formula to estimate stored energy:
- Energy (\( E \)) = \( \eta \times \rho \times g \times h \times V \)
- Where:
- \( \eta = \text{Efficiency (as a decimal, e.g., 85% = 0.85)} \)
- \( \rho = \text{Water density (1000 kg/m³)} \)
- \( g = \text{Acceleration due to gravity (9.81 m/s²)} \)
- \( h = \text{Head (height difference in meters)} \)
- \( V = \text{Water volume (in m³)} \)
How to Use
- Enter the head (in meters) in the “Head” field.
- Enter the water volume (in m³) in the “Water Volume” field.
- Enter the efficiency (in percent) in the “Efficiency” field.
- Optionally, click an adjust button to set typical values (e.g., Low Head).
- Click “Calculate Energy” to see your results.
- Scroll to the “Results” section for detailed calculations.
- Use the share buttons to share your energy output or embed the calculator.
Examples
- Example 1: Head = 100m, Volume = 10000 m³, Efficiency = 85%
Energy = 0.85 × 1000 × 9.81 × 100 × 10000 = 8,338,500,000 J (8.34 GJ) - Example 2: Head = 50m, Volume = 20000 m³, Efficiency = 90%
Energy = 0.90 × 1000 × 9.81 × 50 × 20000 = 8,822,100,000 J (8.82 GJ) - Example 3: Head = 200m, Volume = 5000 m³, Efficiency = 80%
Energy = 0.80 × 1000 × 9.81 × 200 × 5000 = 7,848,000,000 J (7.85 GJ)
