Hydropower Energy Yield Calculator
Formulas
The Energy Yield Calculator estimates annual energy production:
- Energy Yield (\( E \)) = \( P \times H \times (1 – D) \)
- Where:
- \( P \) = Power output (kW)
- \( H \) = Operational hours per year (hours)
- \( D \) = Downtime (decimal, e.g., 5% = 0.05)
- Capacity Factor (\( CF \)) = \( \frac{E}{P \times 8760} \)
- Where 8760 = Total hours in a year
How to Use
- Enter the power output (in kW) in the “Power Output” field.
- Enter the operational hours (in hours/year) in the “Operational Hours” field.
- Enter the downtime (in %) in the “Downtime” field.
- Optionally, click an adjust button to set typical values (e.g., Low Power).
- Click “Calculate Yield” to see the estimated energy yield and capacity factor.
- Scroll to the “Results” section for details.
Examples
- Example 1: Power = 100kW, Hours = 4000h, Downtime = 5%
Yield ≈ 100 × 4000 × (1 – 0.05) = 380,000 kWh; CF ≈ 380,000 / (100 × 8760) ≈ 43.38% - Example 2: Power = 500kW, Hours = 6000h, Downtime = 10%
Yield ≈ 500 × 6000 × (1 – 0.10) = 2,700,000 kWh; CF ≈ 2,700,000 / (500 × 8760) ≈ 61.64% - Example 3: Power = 50kW, Hours = 3000h, Downtime = 0%
Yield ≈ 50 × 3000 × (1 – 0) = 150,000 kWh; CF ≈ 150,000 / (50 × 8760) ≈ 34.25%
