Vitamin Deficiency Risk Calculator

Vitamin Deficiency Risk Calculator

Assess your risk of vitamin deficiency based on diet diversity, sunlight exposure, supplement use, and lifestyle factors.

1 = very limited (few food groups), 5 = highly diverse (varied food groups)
0–120 min/day, ideal is ~15–30 min/day for vitamin D
1 = none, 5 = regular use of multivitamins
1 = low risk (healthy lifestyle), 5 = high risk (stress, smoking, etc.)

Formulas Used

The Vitamin Deficiency Risk Score is calculated using a weighted formula assessing diet diversity, sunlight exposure, supplement use, and lifestyle factors.

  1. Sunlight Exposure Score:

    \[ S_{\text{score}} = \max\left(0, 5 – \frac{|S – 20|}{5}\right) \]

Where \( S \) is sunlight exposure in minutes/day. Score decreases as deviation from 20 minutes increases.

  2. Lifestyle Risk Score:

    \[ L_{\text{score}} = 6 – L \]

Where \( L \) is the lifestyle risk rating (1–5). Inverts the score so lower risk yields a higher score.

  3. Raw Deficiency Score:

    \[ R_{\text{raw}} = w_1 D + w_2 S_{\text{score}} + w_3 U + w_4 L_{\text{score}} \]

    Where:

    • \( D \): Diet diversity rating (1–5)
    • \( S_{\text{score}} \): Sunlight exposure score
    • \( U \): Supplement use rating (1–5)
    • \( L_{\text{score}} \): Lifestyle risk score
    • \( w_1 = 5 \): Weight for diet diversity
    • \( w_2 = 5 \): Weight for sunlight exposure
    • \( w_3 = 5 \): Weight for supplement use
    • \( w_4 = 5 \): Weight for lifestyle factors

  4. Vitamin Deficiency Risk Score:

    \[ \text{VDRS} = \max\left(0, \min\left(100, \frac{R_{\text{raw}}}{100} \cdot 100\right)\right) \]

Normalizes the raw score (0–100) to 0–100. Ratings: Low (0–25), Moderate (25–50), High (50–75), Very High (75–100).

Example Calculations

Example 1: Balanced Lifestyle

Inputs: Diet Diversity = 4, Sunlight Exposure = 15 min/day, Supplement Use = 3, Lifestyle Factors = 2

Calculations:

  • Sunlight Exposure Score: \[ \max\left(0, 5 – \frac{|15 – 20|}{5}\right) = \max(0, 5 – 1) = 4 \]
  • Lifestyle Risk Score: \[ 6 – 2 = 4 \]
  • Raw Deficiency Score: \[ 5 \cdot 4 + 5 \cdot 4 + 5 \cdot 3 + 5 \cdot 4 = 20 + 20 + 15 + 20 = 75 \]
  • Vitamin Deficiency Risk Score: \[ \frac{75}{100} \cdot 100 = 75 \]
  • Rating: High (50–75)

Result: Vitamin Deficiency Risk Score: 75 (High)

Example 2: High-Risk Individual

Inputs: Diet Diversity = 1, Sunlight Exposure = 5 min/day, Supplement Use = 1, Lifestyle Factors = 5

Calculations:

  • Sunlight Exposure Score: \[ \max\left(0, 5 – \frac{|5 – 20|}{5}\right) = \max(0, 5 – 3) = 2 \]
  • Lifestyle Risk Score: \[ 6 – 5 = 1 \]
  • Raw Deficiency Score: \[ 5 \cdot 1 + 5 \cdot 2 + 5 \cdot 1 + 5 \cdot 1 = 5 + 10 + 5 + 5 = 25 \]
  • Vitamin Deficiency Risk Score: \[ \frac{25}{100} \cdot 100 = 25 \]
  • Rating: Low (0–25)

Result: Vitamin Deficiency Risk Score: 25 (Low)

Example 3: Optimal Health

Inputs: Diet Diversity = 5, Sunlight Exposure = 20 min/day, Supplement Use = 5, Lifestyle Factors = 1

Calculations:

  • Sunlight Exposure Score: \[ \max\left(0, 5 – \frac{|20 – 20|}{5}\right) = 5 \]
  • Lifestyle Risk Score: \[ 6 – 1 = 5 \]
  • Raw Deficiency Score: \[ 5 \cdot 5 + 5 \cdot 5 + 5 \cdot 5 + 5 \cdot 5 = 25 + 25 + 25 + 25 = 100 \]
  • Vitamin Deficiency Risk Score: \[ \frac{100}{100} \cdot 100 = 100 \]
  • Rating: Very High (75–100)

Result: Vitamin Deficiency Risk Score: 100 (Very High)

How to Use the Calculator

Follow these steps to assess your vitamin deficiency risk:

  1. Enter Diet Diversity: Rate the variety of your diet (1–5, 1 = very limited, 5 = highly diverse).
  2. Enter Sunlight Exposure: Input daily sunlight exposure in minutes (0–120, ideal ~15–30).
  3. Enter Supplement Use: Rate frequency of supplement use (1–5, 1 = none, 5 = regular).
  4. Enter Lifestyle Factors: Rate lifestyle risk factors like stress or smoking (1–5, 1 = low risk, 5 = high risk).
  5. Calculate: Click “Calculate Vitamin Deficiency Risk Score” to see the result.
  6. Interpret Result: The result shows a 0–100 score with a rating (Low: 0–25, Moderate: 25–50, High: 50–75, Very High: 75–100). Low scores indicate higher risk. If you see “Please fill in all fields,” ensure all inputs are valid.
  7. Share or Embed: Use the share buttons to post results on social media, copy the result, or get an embed code.

Note: This is a simplified model. Actual vitamin deficiency risk depends on additional factors like specific nutrient intake, medical conditions, and blood tests. Consult a healthcare professional for accurate assessment.
